2007 Commissioned Artists

circo dell arteIt is almost time for Vashon Allied Arts’ 30th Annual Art Auction. Over 130 artists have donated original works of art, including painting, sculpture, photography, furniture, jewelry and more. This year’s Italian circus theme, Circo dell’Arte, promises to enchant all with authentic Venetian “Masques” interpreted by Island artists, special performances of aerial work and roving characters, and of course delectable food.

The Art Auction is the biggest art party on the island and VAA’s largest fundraiser. “There is a huge variety of artwork donated,” said VAA Executive Director Molly Reed. “There is something here for everybody. Island artists have been very generous.” The auction is chaired by Kira Bacon and Susan Sullivan with participation by all VAA Trustees.

The Art Auction begins this year with a Preview and Artist Reception on August 31. If you miss the Preview, there is still plenty of time to see the art. Stop by the Blue Heron Gallery during the first two weeks of September and check out all the wonderful art that will be auctioned or visit the on-line gallery at www.circodellarte.org.

Six artists were commissioned to create pieces for the Auction. Friday features Brian Fisher, Dean Hanmer and Mike Urban. On Saturday, work by Elaine Hanowell, Karen Hersh-Crozier and Terri Fletcher will be auctioned.

Friday’s Auction is still a casual affair but now includes a buffet dinner (catered by the Hardware Store Restaurant) as well as “A Taste of Vashon,” delicious hors d’oeuvres donated by the Island’s best restaurants, caterers and VAA. The evening begins at 6:30 pm with a silent auction, followed by a Circo dell’Arte performance and live auction. Tickets are $40 per person or $20 for contributing artists or Saturday guests.

Saturday night’s auction festivities begin at 5:30 pm and include both silent and live auctions and a sit down dinner (catered by The Hardware Store Restaurant). There will be a Circo dell’Arte performance and the “Masque” centerpieces will be auctioned off (see article on page 2). Carnevale tickets are $100 per person or $1000 for a table of ten. Circo tickets at $120 per person are sold out.

If you would like the chance to win one of the artworks at the auction ($700 value, excluding commissioned works) then make sure you buy plenty of Silver Raffle tickets. They are $10 each and there will be one winner each night!

Art Auction sponsors are John L. Scott Real Estate, Puget Sound Energy, Beth de Groen of John L. Scott Real Estate, and Thriftway.
