Join this workshop to explore what is possible with this “best of ancient painting media.”
From raw wax, hard at room temperature, made fluid by heat, to soft wax mixtures without heat that hardens as the painting dries, come see something very old that is new and fresh once again, with recipes, bibliography & sources.
All materials provided, including painting boards, wax media, pigment and painting tools. Bring sack lunch and painting knife or old worn brush to experiment and play with.

Learn to paint in the Russian Impressionist's tradition from still lifes and portrait models.
Class is designed to guide each student at their own level through basics of oil painting-exploring color with still lifes and/or portraits. Friday evening, observe a painting demonstration, followed by plenty of time for questions. Immerse yourself into learning how to paint Saturday and Sunday.

NEW Drawing the Figure in Charcoal
Instructor: William Forrester
Explore the figure, nude and clothed in this drawing class for beginning and intermediate artists.
Using primarily soft and dark charcoal, consider light and shadow, gesture, proportion, composition, contour line, anatomy and the model’s attitude and expression.
Bring newsprint, charcoal paper, kneaded erasers and charcoal. Good draftsmanship is a daunting combination of all these elements and more! Let’s get started!

NEW Shoot to Show: The Animals of Vashon
Instructor: Ray Pfortner
Animals, wild or domestic, furry or feathered, are one of the most challenging photography subjects – and also one of the most rewarding. With animals of Vashon as the assignment, learn (1) how to get better photographs from your camera, whether a point and shoot or an SLR, digital or film, and (2) how to turn those photographs into framed prints for a juried exhibition. Explore camera handling, exposure, focus, special effects and artistic composition. Learn how to mat and frame, sign, edition, copyright and price your work.
Photographs will be juried into a final show at The Hardware Store Gallery in June. A portion of sales will be donated to VIPP. Class is designed for photographers of all ages and levels of experience, from beginners to emerging pros.

Metal Arts

Learn to use a plasma cutter and basic welding techniques with mild steel and assorted found objects in this two-day workshop. Create a small metal sculpture of your own design. Workshop taught in artist’s shop.
